Toronto apartment building fire results in 1 death, 4 injuries

One person has died and four others are injured after a fire at an apartment building in Scarborough.

A fire was reported at a residential building on Lawrence Avenue East near Morningside Avenue at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Toronto police said a fire was reported on the fifth floor of a building in the area. Toronto buses were called in to shelter residents.

Toronto Fire Capt. Dan Viera said two of those rescued from the building were in critical condition and two others had non-life-threatening injuries. Another was pulled from the building without vital signs and pronounced dead.

Since the fire was put out, some residents have been allowed to return home in parts of the building, while others have been displaced. It was not immediately clear how many were forced to leave.

Toronto Community Housing, which runs the building, said a reception centre had been setup for displaced residents. “We give our sincerest condolences to the family of the victim and hope for a speedy recovery for the injured,” the organization said in a statement. “Information on affected tenants is not yet available.”
