Italy shatters English hearts in shootout as Euro title goes from home to Rome

Italy overcame England's dream start to capture the European Championship with a shootout victory in the final of Euro 2020 on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.

Leonardo Bonucci's 67th minute equalizer cancelled out Luke Shaw's second-minute goal for England to force extra time and then, with the score still level 1-1, penalties.

Italy then captured its second European crown with a 3-2 victory from the spot.

Domenico Berardi, Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Italy in the shootout and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made two saves at the end of the shootout.

Ticketless fans storm Wembley
Earlier, fans without tickets have stormed past security and gained access to the European Championship final between England and Italy.

Wembley Stadium says, "There was a breach of security and a small group of people got into the stadium."

Fans could be seen standing in the stadium bowl unable to access their seats.

Wembley's statement says officials "are now working closely with stadium stewards and security to remove these people. Anyone inside the stadium without a ticket will be instantly ejected."

The 90,000-seat Wembley has a pandemic-restricted capacity of about 67,000.CBC
